Want to lose weight? Eat your protein!

Make sure you eat your protein!

In the midst of what feels like a never ending war between high carb/low carb, high fat, people seem to forget about the importance of protein and its role in fat loss.

So, here are some reasons why protein is important when trying to lose weight.

1. IT SATISFIES & SAVES CALORIES

Protein is important because it helps you feel fuller longer. Simple as that! Having protein around slows down digestion making us feel more satisfied and less likely to go back for seconds or that sneaky late night snack.

2. IT CURBS CARB HIGHS AND LOWS

Protein and carbs are friends. Eating protein with carbohydrates is a good thing! This slows down your absorption of sugar, meaning that it helps keep your blood sugar from skyrocketing and wards off those nasty sugar crashes.

3. IT BURNS MORE ENERGY

TEF stands for ‘Thermic Effect of Food’. This basically means the amount of energy and calories your body needs to process the macronutrients you’ve just eaten. Protein has a higher TEF level compared to carbohydrates and fat, which means you’re actually burning more calories to digest protein. You heard right!

4. IT FUELS FAT BURNING

As you are losing weight, your body loses fat, but unfortunately it also loses muscle. During this process, it is especially important that you continue to eat enough protein in your diet. Having adequate protein coming in from your food fuels fat burning while preserving calorie-burning lean muscle. So in other words, eat your protein to get rid of the stuff you don’t want and to replace it with the stuff you do want!

So there you have it, 4 great reasons on why you should keep your protein intake up! You can find protein in lots of different types of food, not just meat. If you are vegetarian eggs are great, or if you are vegan, you can get your protein from other foods like quinoa, tofu, beans and lentils.
